The Afonso Cerqueira Wreck

The Corveta Afonso was sunk on 4 September 2018 south of Cabo Girão, off the coast of the island of Madeira. The ship, which immediately after sinking was declared a national park, forms an artificial reef that is home to a variety of marine animals. The wreck is easily accessible by boat from Funchal. The Corveta is 85 meters long and is still in excellent condition. This wreck hosted the 2022 Europen Open Championship of underwater photography.

How it went down

The sinking of a wreck in Cabo Girao marine park serves two important purposes: creating an exciting opportunity for scuba diving enthusiasts and fostering the growth of marine life through the creation of an artificial reef.

By intentionally sinking a wreck, divers are provided with a unique and thrilling experience. Exploring the depths and intricacies of the sunken vessel offers an adventure unlike any other. This deliberate placement within Cabo Girao marine park ensures that divers have access to a captivating underwater landscape, rich with history and teeming with marine biodiversity.

Beyond catering to the interests of scuba divers, this deliberate act also benefits the local marine ecosystem. The sunken wreck acts as an artificial reef, providing a new habitat for various species to thrive. Over time, algae and spongees will develop on the structure, attracting a diverse array of fish and other marine organisms. This not only enhances the overall biodiversity within Cabo Girao marine park but also contributes to conservation efforts by promoting sustainable tourism practices.

The sinking of this wreck in Cabo Girao marine park represents a thoughtful approach towards both recreational activities and environmental preservation. It showcases how human intervention can create opportunities for exploration while simultaneously supporting the natural world beneath our oceans' surface.
