This was possible thanks to the contribution from Pedro Gomes. 🔹 Second event: Another group of three killer whales carried out a coordinated attack on a live pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps). During the attack, the pygmy sperm whale expelled a reddish-brown ‘ink’ — a rarely observed defense mechanism! ✨ What an incredible sighting! ✨ Today we encountered a group of Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) here in Madeira 💙🐋🐋 These whales hold the world record for the longest dive of any mammal — over 3 hours underwater 😱🌊! Normally, they dive to 1,000–3,000 meters deep, which is why seeing them at the surface (let alone more than one!) is so rare. They’re also easy to recognize: males often have lots of white scars from battles with each other, and their blunt head shape is very distinctive 👀. Madeira is one of the few places where your chances are a little higher 🍀 thanks to our deep ocean just off the coast. Scarred, Squid-Savvy, and Simply Stunning 💥🐬 Yesterday we were lucky to encounter a pod of Risso’s dolphins — one of the most unique species we see here in Madeira! With their tall, curved dorsal fins and heavily scarred bodies (from squid hunts and social sparring), they’re unmistakable in the wild. 🔍 Fun facts: 🦷 Unlike most dolphins, Risso’s have no teeth in their upper jaw — only 4 to 14 in the lower one! Perfect for slurping up soft-bodied prey like squid. 🌊 These deep divers can plunge over 500 meters and stay submerged for more than 10 minutes while hunting in the open ocean. 🎭 And those white scars? They increase with age and are almost like fingerprints — no two are alike! Madeira’s deep waters are full of surprises. Yesterday , we were lucky enough to have a pod of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba)bow-riding alongside our boat! 🌊🐬 This sighting was extra special because in Madeira, these dolphins usually leap out of the water to get away from boats, but today they stayed with us, riding the waves. 💙 Their scientific name is quite fitting: Stenella means ‘narrow’ and coeruleoalba refers to their distinct blue and white stripes, which make them one of the most striking dolphin species.
