Monk Seals in Madeira: The World’s Rarest Seal

Madeira Island, an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, is not only known for its stunning landscapes and lush greenery but also for its incredible underwater world. As scuba divers explore the depths around Madeira, they encounter a variety of marine life, including the elusive monk seal—the rarest seal in the world.

Located on the extreme east of the island, Ponta de São Lourenço offers crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, and dramatic underwater landscapes. It’s the only place on the island where you can spot the elusive monk seal. Rays, barracudas, octopuses, and even black coral add to the allure of this dive site. For adventurous divers, there are challenging sites that plunge to depths of up to 40 meters .

The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is one of the world’s most endangered marine mammals, with fewer than 600 individuals currently surviving . This elusive species belongs to the family Phocidae and is the sole member of the genus Monachus.

Let’s dive into the fascinating world of this rare seal.

Description and Characteristics

Size and Appearance: At birth, these seals measure approximately 80 centimeters (2.6 feet) in length, growing to an average of 2.4 meters (7.9 feet) as adults. Males are slightly larger, weighing around 320 kilograms (710 pounds), while females weigh about 300 kilograms (660 pounds). Their fur is black (males) or brown to dark grey (females), with a paler belly that is close to white in males 2 .
Distinctive Features: The Mediterranean monk seal has a short, broad, and flat snout with long nostrils that face upward. Unlike their Hawaiian relatives, which have more forward nostrils, these seals have pronounced upward-facing nostrils. Their flippers are relatively short, and they possess two pairs of retractable abdominal teats, unlike most other pinnipeds2 .
Reproductive Behavior: These seals typically give birth in inaccessible undersea caves, although historical records indicate they once used open beaches. Pups are about 1 meter (3.3 feet) long and weigh around 15–18 kilograms (33–40 pounds). Their skin is covered in dark brown to black hair, which is replaced after six to eight weeks by shorter adult hair. Adults continue to molt annually, resulting in changing color vibrancy throughout the year .

Habitat and Distribution

Isolated Subpopulations: As of 2015, fewer than 700 Mediterranean monk seals survive in three or four isolated subpopulations. These subpopulations are found in the Mediterranean Sea, especially in the Aegean Sea, the archipelago of Madeira, and the Cabo Blanco area in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean .
World’s Rarest Pinniped: This species is believed to be the world’s rarest pinniped, making its conservation critically important. Efforts are underway to protect their habitats and promote their survival 2 .

IUCN Status: The Mediterranean monk seal is classified as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is listed on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) .

The Afonso Cerqueira Wreck

The Corveta Afonso was sunk on 4 September 2018 south of Cabo Girão, off the coast of the island of Madeira. The ship, which immediately after sinking was declared a national park, forms an artificial reef that is home to a variety of marine animals. The wreck is easily accessible by boat from Funchal. The Corveta is 85 meters long and is still in excellent condition. This wreck hosted the 2022 Europen Open Championship of underwater photography.

How it went down

The sinking of a wreck in Cabo Girao marine park serves two important purposes: creating an exciting opportunity for scuba diving enthusiasts and fostering the growth of marine life through the creation of an artificial reef.

By intentionally sinking a wreck, divers are provided with a unique and thrilling experience. Exploring the depths and intricacies of the sunken vessel offers an adventure unlike any other. TOP 3 DES MEILLEURS SITES DE PLONGÉES À MADERE

Madère, communément appelée: «L’île aux fleurs», «L’île au printemps éternel », «Le jardin flottant de l’Atlantique» ou encore “la perle de l'Atlantique” mériterait de gagner un nouveau surnom: “le bijou subacquatique”.

La richesse de ses fonds marins est à l'image de son extraordinaire beauté: Madère est un bijou aussi bien sur terre que sous la mer.

L´île est la partie émergée d’une chaîne volcanique sous-marine de 6000 m, dont de singulières formations de lave et autre rocher, parfois recouvert de corail noir, parsèment les fonds. Les parois, fissures ou surplombs représentent des abris parfaits pour une vie sous-marine surprenante.

Ses eaux tempérées (entre 18°C et 25°C) et cristallines en font une destination de plongée idéale toute l'année.

L'île a accueilli en 2022, le championnat européen de photographie sous-marine.

1. GARAJAU NATIONAL PARK

Zone protégée depuis 1986 et offrant des conditions uniques, tant pour sa situation géographique que pour sa diversité biologique et ses eaux cristallines, Garajau est sans aucun doute le meilleur lieu de plongée de Madère. Le site Praia do Garajau abrite les emblématiques mérous , dont certains une cinquantaine d'année et mesure plus d'un mètre. Vousn pourrez ainsi rencontrer Elvis, Rambo, Tony, Bouddha, Englishman.

2. E pave Afonso Cerqueira F488

Coulée le 4 septembre 2018, cet impressionnant navire de guerre, qui mesure 85 mètres de longforme aujourd'hui un récif artificiel qui abrite une variété d'animaux marins. Il est facilement accessible en bateau et en excellent état.

3. T -REEF

Composée de 2 pinacles, ce site est une véritable tation de nettoyage sous - marine . Les murènes qui adorent se faire nettoyer par les crevettes y sont très nombrsuses. Vous pourrez y voir plus de 3 espèces différentes. La vie marine y est abondante, et la probabilité de voir d'énormes bans de barracudas est élevée!

Diving with the groupers of Garajau / Madeira

Diving in Madeira is a must to do on the island, either if you are certified or if it is for a first-time scuba diving.

There are many things to see, the underwater environment of Madeira is vibrant with a lot of action but one of the things that make diving such a great activity is the possibility to interact with marine life.

Of course, we need to be extremely careful and pay a lot of attention when interacting with any marine life and in general, we support interactions that come voluntarily from the animals themselves.

In the marine reserve of Garajau you may have the possibility to observe the famous groupers and in certain cases get very, very close to them.

These grouper are used to divers and look like they really like to have us around.

Believe it or not, we know them by name.

They all have different behaviours, sizes and territories. If you meet "Toni" , it is going to be fun; Toni is one of the most friendly groupers and always likes to be photographed. "Elvis" instead is quite lazy, usually lies down on a sandy bottom and is not bothered if you want to get a selfie with him. Elvis is also "The king" of the area, it is in fact the alfa male. If you find a grouper in a cave is going to be probably "The English man" due to its big mouth :)

Here and there you may find Rambo or Minnie, the only female in the group.

When to dive in Madeira?

Scuba diving off Madeira Island is available year-round. The best time for diving however is between June and November. The area is known for its mild climate, warm summers and extremely mild winters. The average air temperature in the summer is around 24C/75F and 18C/64F in the winter. The average water temperature is around 24C in the summer and never get below 18C n the winter with no thermo-cline. The water visibility is generally very good and can be over 30m/98ft. From April to May it is Sperm Whale watching season here.

What to see in Madeira

The waters off Madeira are rich with marine life that includes a variety of species like barracudas, parrotfish, huge groupers, Stingrays and eagle rays, trumpet fish, tunas, schooling jacks, octopus, cuttlefish, moorays, grunts, cowbreams, sharks and even mantas or the extremely rare Monk Seal. Biodiversity is stunning, you can find species that you would expect in mediterraneans waters and more tropical species all toghether. Diving enthusiasts and tourists visiting Madeira can enjoy whale wathing who usually show up off/shore all year round. Different species of dolphins along with very rare Beaked Whales are also common to see in the waters of Madeira.

Diving Conditions in Madeira

With Azul diving center you'll get a bit spoiled as you'll get directly on the diving boat from the Marina of Funchal just 2 minutes from the diveshop. In general due to the morfology and logistic of the coastline the other shops will ask you to actually swim to the boat.

The waters on the south coast of Funchal are generally calm and allows nice and relaxing dives; the more advanced divers will enjoy also divesites with excpected currents which make the dives a bit more challenging but also rewarding. The main divesites like Garajau National park and the Afonso Cerqueria wreck are at maximum 15 minutes from Funchal wich makes the city the perfect hub for your diving holidays.

Where to DIVE in Madeira?

Madeira Island, an archipelago in the Atlantic, home to a UNESCO World Heritage site and several eco-marine parks making it an outstanding scuba diving destination.

Madeira is a haven for an endless variety of marine flora and fauna as well as one of the best spots for whale and dolphin watching. Other marine species include giant groupers, moray eels, barracudas, sharks, monk seals, sting rays and sometimes manta rays and mobula rays have been seen passing b y.

Several species of crab are found around the island including the strange-looking arrow crab. The Giant grouper is another beautiful sight and is an emblematic species of the Garajau Marine Reserve as well as the rare monk seal which can sometimes be spotted.

MY TOP 4

1. GARAJAU NATIONAL PARK

The National Park is situated at 5-10 minutes boat ride from Funchal and includes several different dive spots. This is the place to be :)

The most famous dive sites are: Praia do Garajau, T-Reef, Arena, Pinaculo, Gruta and Baia dos Porcos. They are all characterized by an extremely rich biodiversity, clear waters and an abundance of marine life! This zone is a paradise for underwater photography. Divers may find here tunas, mackerels, large groupers, barracudas, huge stingrays, eagle rays, moorays etc. In addition, from time to time we have the chance to spot some amazing creatures, such as Monk Seal, frogfish, huge round stingrays, sea horses, sharks, Manta rays and turtles. The average depth is 15-20 m.

3. PO NTA DE SÁO LOURENÇO

Ponta de São Lourenço , located on the extreme east of the island, is a diver’s dream come true. With its crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, and dramatic underwater landscapes, offers divesites for beginners and advanced divers. The area is populated by the elusive Monk Seal (the rarest seal in the world), rays, barracudas, octopus and it is the only place on the island where you can spot the black coral.

For the more adventurers divers, there are challenging dive sites that plunge to depths of up to 40 meters . In this area there are also 2 wrecks; the Newton and the Forerunner.

4. BLUE HOLE

The Blue Hole is definitely one of my favourite dive sites. You'll enter in a hole that will lead to a 20mt long tunnel full of life such as trumpet fish, lobsters and moray eels. At the exit, you will find huge shoals of fish such as yellowfin grunts and cow breams. I like to call it the "Fish tornado" dive site. With a little bit of luck, we also meet sting rays, eagle rays and a monk seal.

This is my personal opinion after +1000 dives in Madeira and many more around the world; it goes without saying that many other divesites are worth a visit!
